East Kilbride Disability Sports Club was formed
in the Autumn of 1999 by parents of young people with special needs. It
has developed considerably since formation and the affairs of the Club
are conducted by an Executive Committee consisting of Office Bearers and
other elected members - all on an entirely voluntary basis. A representative
from South Lanarkshire Disability Sport, Scott Dunbar, also serves on
the Club's Management Committee to provide liaison and partnership with
Local Authority Sports Associations for people with disabilities.
The Club's main objectives are as follows:-
- To encourage and promote participation in sport and
recreation for young people with special needs.
- To provide opportunities for young people to develop
their sporting skills to competitive levels.
- To promote and support local and national sporting
competitions.
- To encourage helpers and volunteers to take part in
Coach Education Courses specifically for Disabled Sportspeople.
In recognition of our contribution to Disability sports
within the South Lanarkshire area the Club was recently presented with
Valuing Volunteers Certificates by Solve (South Lanarkshire Volunteering
Enterprises) and by South Lanarkshire Council for the 2001 International
Year of Volunteers.
So why not come along to the Club and join our multi-sports
activities - who says you can't compete and enjoy the fun and recreation
- you could even go for 'GOLD' at the Special Olympics!
